Sinus Lift Procedure

If you are someone who has lost teeth in the upper jaw, then you need a sinus lift to have dental implants placed. This is due to circumstances in which the bone where teeth are missing naturally begins to shrink or resorb over time. The roots of the back teeth are usually positioned either very close to or within the sinus cavity. The vertical height of the remaining bone after tooth loss is often not sufficient enough to support an implant. With insufficient bone to securely place a dental implant, a sinus lift is necessary to move the sinus away from the roots of the teeth or to create additional bone in the area.
What is Done During a Sinus Augmentation Procedure?
Sinuses are hollow air-filled cavities in the skull. The maxillary sinuses are the largest of these cavities and help humidify and filter air. In the sinus augmentation procedure, the sinus membrane is lifted or elevated. The space left between the elevated membrane and the underlying bone is grafted with bone graft material. The graft material forms a scaffolding for your natural bone to fill in space, creating stability for future dental implant placement.
